About NPA Learn to Swim We believe there is a difference between a swim lesson and learning to swim. This is why we follow the nationally recognized learn-to-swim programs, used by the American Red Cross and SwimAmerica. The Learn to Swim program offers six levels. We will be able to recognize swimmer achievement at every phase of their progression and build their confidence as they are learning to swim.
Our coaches will emphasize correct learning from the very first lesson. Swimmers move to the higher skill groups as they achieve proficiency in the criteria used by their present group. Advancement is based on outcomes, meaning there are specific skills that must be mastered before progressing to the next level.
All programs are taught by NPA lifeguards who are trained by Northview swim coach and instructor trainer, Terri Eudy. Our coaches are in-water instructors and are versed in proper breathing and stroke mechanics. Our program focuses on the critical skills your child needs to achieve in order to advance through our program and be safe in and around water for a lifetime.
Please note that although our pools are kept at 80-82°, we recommend purchasing rash guard shirts and swim caps to help maintain body temperature, if needed.
Levels 1-3 Fundamentals
Level 1 (Water Introduction) Best for nervous/beginner students. Includes an introduction to the basic skills necessary for swimming. We will work on water adaptation, movement, breath holding and release, face submersion, bobbing, blowing bubbles and air exchange. Swimmers will gain confidence and master submerging their face in the water.
Level 2 (Water Acclimation) For swimmers who are comfortable holding breath and floating on the stomach and back independently. We will work on kicking skills with front and back glides and will master short (the width of the pool) front and back crawl swim.
Level 3 (Skill Introduction) For swimmers who can swim short distances on front (freestyle) and back. We will work on bilateral side breathing, how to tread water, and begin diving instruction. Students will work on endurance in front and back crawl and be introduced to elementary backstroke.
Levels 4-6 Stroke Refinement
Level 4 (Skill Advancement) For swimmers who have mastered freestyle with side breathing for short distances and can swim on their backs with a continuous stroke and kick. Students will work on water safety, treading water and diving, and will be introduced to breaststroke and butterfly as well as flip turns.
Level 5 (Skill Refinement) For swimmers who have mastered freestyle and backstroke and have been introduced to butterfly and breaststroke. Swimmers will continue to refine butterfly, breaststroke, and turns, and work on water safety. This class will prepare swimmers to swim competitively if desired.
Level 6 (Skill Mastery) For swimmers who are proficient in freestyle, backstroke, and butterfly. Swimmers will work on stroke refinement and endurance and will continue learning water safety. Great for proficient swimmers who are interested in swimming competitively.
